What is Electrosurgery?

Electrosurgery is a medical procedure that uses high-frequency electrical currents to cut, coagulate (seal blood vessels), or remove tissue. It effectively treats 17 types of skin lesions including, but not limited to, warts (including plantar warts), skin tags, age spots, small keloids, angiomas, actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis and more.

How does Electrosurgery work?

Electrosurgery uses an electrode to deliver high-frequency electrical currents to target tissue during surgery helping to minimize bleeding and achieve precise tissue control. The current produces heat when it flows through the tissue, causing cellular disruption. The heat can be used for cutting or coagulating. The area is numbed prior to the start of treatment, and the procedure itself takes between 5 to 10 minutes depending on the size and complexity of the target area.

Does Electrosurgery Hurt?

The procedure itself is virtually painless as the area is numbed, and the procedure is isolated to the target area, ensuring surrounding healthy tissue is protected. Patients may feel a small sting as the electrode is initially applied, but this lasts for only a few seconds.

When will I see results and how long will they last?

With a successful treatment, the treated area may blister, turn a dark brown or black, or form a crust/scab within a few hours or days. This is a normal part of the healing and regeneration process. If a scab or crust forms, it is recommended that you not pick, pull or irritate the scab, and let it slough off naturally. This should take approximately 7-14 days, depending on the skin lesion size, location and your healing ability. Once the scab has sloughed off, the new skin may be red, sensitive, or even itch as it is healing. Do not bandage, irritate, or apply medications after the scab falls off. Normal skin color should return over a few weeks or months.

Is Electrosurgery Safe?

Electrosurgery is very safe and provides several advantages, including reduced blood loss, faster healing time, and more precise control compared to traditional scalpel surgery.
