What is TMD?

The temporomandibular joint (TMD) is a dysfunction of the TMJ. Many people use the terms TMJ and TMD interchangeably, but in either case, they are referring to chronic pain associated with the region. TMJ dysfunction occurs when the muscles and ligaments around your jaw joints become inflamed or irritated from being displaced or overworked with excessive grinding or overactivity. The condition may be acute or chronic, and the resulting pain may be mild or severe.
